Narrative in Social Media and Learning

Can we combine social media with learning? Yes, we can. Introducing Instagram Account @ Not_A_Florist

  • Title: Not_A_Florist Instagram Page

  • Concept Overview: Instagram is one of our generation's most influential social media platforms; people use IG to build connections with each other, raise their reputations, and share new knowledge regards different topics. I have created a demo page called "Not_A_Florist," which means the account is not a florist for selling flowers but for sharing various flowers on Mother Earth. I aim to share different kinds of flowers with the audience, including their colors and the plants' symbolism.

  • Concept Descriptions (User's Needs and How Can We Help): People who use Instagram (IG) and are interested in learning more about flowers can follow the account to see further fun facts about the plants they like or dislike. Also, people who want to send their beloved one a bouquet but are unsure which types are suitable for the occasion can check on the account pages to see the meanings of the flowers and get the right one. In addition, due to different cultures, there are other meanings we give to plants. For instance, people in Asia see Chrysanthemum as a flower to show empathy and gravity for the lost one. They use this type of flower specifically at funerals, so sending someone alive a bouquet with a chrysanthemum would be disrespectful and rude. However, in the United States, chrysanthemums symbolize friendship, happiness, and well-being, which is entirely different. I want to help people understand these flowers and their symbolism.

  • Target Audience: Since I will utilize Instagram as the platform to give the lesson, people who want to view the account page will need an Instagram account. There is no limited age range for the audience, but the page will be designed in English so the target audience will need basic English knowledge.

  • Learning Goals: 1) The learners will be able to see different flowers and know the symbolism behind each type; 2) The learners will be able to learn how the flowers have different meanings due to cultural differences; 3) The learners will be able to communicate with people from different countries to see more fun facts or fairytales of their cultures about the types of flower.
